Commission on Missions

The people of Union Avenue United Methodist Church respond generously when asked to help those in need. We have a passion to aid people in our community and throughout the world. Many of the causes we support are sponsored by UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee of Relief, an organization that provides disaster relief and ongoing funds to worthwhile causes. Habitat for Humanity

In 2005, Union Avenue United Methodist Church teamed up with the Alliance chapter of Habitat for Humanity to build a house for a local Alliance family. Many members of our church provided labor, refreshments, and devotions during the build. A portion of the monies raised helped to build a house in a Third World country.

Church and Society

The United Methodist Church has an official document called "The Social Principles." It was first adopted by the 1972 General Conference and has been revised at every G.C. since then, meeting every 4 years. The Church and Society Committee is responsible for educating the congregation about these principles, and for promoting their observance by the members. Basic freedoms and human rights, care of the earth, church and state relations, ethics, peace, poverty, immigration, racial justice, freedom from religious and political oppression for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, are all concerns of this committee as it tries to strengthen families, end capital punishment, provide help for the disabled, respect the needs of the aging, and support affirmative action for women and children.

Our recent actions have included working on legislative issues, offering Fair Trade Coffee, Tea and Cocoa to enable small farmers to get adequate remuneration for their products, and supporting a PFLAG group (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays) that meets once a month at the church.
